British built Castle William (hence the derivation of Castle Island) during the Revolutionary War, and it is said that George Washington ordered his troops, when approaching Dorchester Heights on March 17, 1776, to use the password "St. Patrick", just the day before the British evacuated Boston. Thus it is no surprise that today Evacuation Day and St. Patrick's Day are celebrated simultaneously.
